Trust me, I never knew they were weird names until one of my friends pointed it out. Well yeah, Carolina Liar does sound a bit off the road and elusive, but trust me it's bands like these that produce good songs, songs that are infectious, intoxicating and addictive and somewhat somehow make you wanna jam along with'em. Or you'd rather think Britney Spears, Backstreetboys or N'Sync would generate waves of better songs than these bands tagged with 'strange' names? I bet they dun even know how to write them :p.

Awrite, I'm gonna put an end to my antics now. I'm finally back in Kuantan, my hometown, for GOOD. This time for real, I get to finally be the DRIVER cuz in case you haven't known, Kuantan is MY TURF(seriously). I don't know my way round George Town and my everyday modes of commuting in Penang were either my two ever-reliable feet, the untrustworthy RapidPenang or the generous rides from my seniors, Toulouse and friends at House No.10. Hurm, those were the days!!! Now, I'm a happy driver in Kuantan :D.

Owh and the coolest thing is, I get to stick 'round for almost a month before I step into the working world for real<------Well that's if I really am moving to Port Klang :p. It's only been three days and I've already started to miss all the good and crazy times in Penang, the food, the people and the place where I had been staying for the past three months. Aahhh, all the good memories.

H1N1 Scare At USM!!!

Dr. Gam came in yesterday morning and calmly told us(me and my lab seniors) that USM had decided to go public with the news that there were 23 confirmed cases of H1N1 in which all of'em stemmed from the 8th Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Conference(APPC) held on June 27-30 at USM's school of pharmaceutical sciences, the school where my lab is situated at. We weren't exactly shocked, only that we were in disbelief. I mean, how could it be that goddam close to us and that we didn't know? I was thinking, it's been like what, almost 6 days and they're only making this public now? Fuck yeah, I do agree Malaysians have always been slow learners. Guess I have to learn to live with that fact, DAMMIT!! And I never thought I had to go thru any medical screenings, yeah that's what I thought until I had to go thru one that morning. I thought I was fucked big time!! In the process of getting screened, I saw a few wearing face masks, the surgical type. Sigh, was it juz me or that I was a bit too cocky cuz I looked with contempt at those people with surgical masks. I thought, it's no big deal dude, look at us, we have indirectly come in contact with all those who've displayed the symptoms. And yet, we are still freely roaming the school, don't even bother putting on a face mask. Hell yeah, I'm not bloody kidding you!! Fact is, Dr. Gam herself had actually unknowingly come in contact with a few of those patients(she had to supervise'em) since she was one of the participants of the APPC. And unknowingly, she as usual on her daily routines, had come to check on us, and our research results a few times a day after the conference. Hence, it's been like what, almost 7 days we'd been exposed to the deadly virus unknowingly. Shit!! If the outbreak was somewhat the red alert type, we wud have been quarantined indefinitely, and that's when we'd be fried. The whole school wud have been locked down by then since it wud've been hard to contain the spread. As you might have already guessed, we have become the talk of the whole university since our school was where all this mess kicked off. Dang!!! By the way, we went thru the screening, and we are clear. So, the next time you see me, don't bother putting on a face mask. I'm officialy free of the virus, at least for now. Heck awrite, dun pray for the worst. lol. Anyways, juz hope everyone can log onto the ministry of health's website and keep yourself posted with the update on H1N1. Always wash your hands(read the proper hand washing protocols on the website of malaysia's ministry of health) before you eat, or after touching something of unknown origin.

as of today, the ministry of health has apparently confirmed another two cases of H1N1 with their origins stemming from the 8th APPC.

Malaysia's First SGM Culture Center - Penang Kaikan

<img style="cursor:pointer; Very fortunate in fact cuz that was the very moment I'd been waiting for for my entire 23 years. I'd been wanting to drop by the Culture Center ever since I first got here other than of corse the Bukit Tambun Culture Center which I had the chance to invade during the Northern Region Students Kenshukai Meet. It is the oldest SGM culture center in Malaysia. Even though it looks oddly new due to the recent renovation done on the facade of this piece of ND Buddhism citadel, it kinda still with juz one look gives you the impression of an old medieval architecture. This really spells the echoes of the past. Beautiful, very beautiful indeed and majestically and strategically erected in the center of Georgetown.

Abortion: Left, Right, and Center...

In light of the recent protests (pictures below) over obama's commencement speech at Notre Dame which of course centered around his support for abortion rights, I guess it is time to address the issue up, front and center from a fresh, different dimension and I think those involved in the war of words should already start engaging each other. And as appalling as human behaviors could be, this dissension had actually claimed the life of a famous pro-choice activist and abortion doctor who was shot dead in a Reformation Lutheran Church in his Wichita, Kansas hometown. I bet there were many more cases of such nature which did not get to the headlines.

We are very much aware of what those pro-life proponents have in their mind about abortion. And we totally get what those pro-choice upholders have in their mind either. Both camps have undoubtedly heckled each other to a point where the differences seem irreconcilable. Even Obama himself in his commencement speech acknowledged and I quote "at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable." Hence, I do not understand why these very people cannot stop to think for a while and have the guts to step out of their niche and try to see the issue from a fresh set of focal point. Who cares if you're not a Christian or a Buddhist or an Agnostic for juz a moment? You juz have to think and fully utilize your brain and put yourselves in someone else's shoes. We have to admit that we are different. We cannot always agree on a single thing all the time. There will be times when we disagree. It's a lie if you think we are made to agree with each other, even the so called God couldn't agree with most of the things we do. And this is why dialogue proves important and not by killing someone. Resolving the differences by engaging in a heinous act of violence is juz absurd and totally unacceptable. If they think this could be resolved that easily by killing off someone who's obstructing them, there's no way they can guarantee the other camp won't be thinking about plotting to do the same. The fiery debate between the two camps is highly saturated, we know it and they know it and has been going on for too long with no ultimate end in sight. Let me put these in a very simple form of disparity between the two.

Pro-life upholders(mostly devout Christians and Catholics) think ABORTION is completely WRONG, SINFUL and defies God's teachings:

i) every abortion kills a baby,

ii) deliberate abortion of unborn baby when the mother's life is not in danger is murder,

iii)abortion equals killing the most defenseless human beings,

iv)abortion takes away the right to life of the unborn baby,

v) baby is a growing, living human right from the earliest stage. they believe life starts at conception.

Pro-choice upholders(mostly agnostics) think abortion is a matter of individual rights.

i) women have the right to choose what they wanna do with their own lives.

ii) the responsibilities are a matter of individual choice.

iii) believe in the separation of church and state.

iv) religious freedom and education are a constitutional right for every citizen.

v) not everyone is christian by birth, hence it's their choice to be one or not.

The differences are too much to bear. Yeah. Believe it or not, it's not gonna be easy for us to find anything in common between the two feuding camps. However, I truly believe we will be able to find the common ground juz by engaging each other. Dialogue or diplomacy is very very important to break the stalemate.

While we're at it, I personally think abortion is an individual choice. If they are christians, whether or not they approve abortion is completely up to them. Who are we to judge them? We are no God. This is between them and God. We can only advise and tell them it is wrong. But in the end, the decision lies in their hands. We cannot force our beliefs on someone else. Even in Buddhist teachings, we too can only advise. We cannot force our beliefs on others. Buddhists believe in karma. Whatever you do will bounce back on you. Therefore, if you truly understand the word karma, you will be able to get why Buddhism kinda stands in the middle when it comes to abortion. Buddhism doesn't say much about restricting and stopping you from going for abortion, it tells you what is right and what is wrong and in the end, you will have to decide through your wisdom on what to do next.

Policy vs Practice: The Multicultural and Anti-Racist Education in Malaysia's National School

Pulled this interesting piece of writing from Malaysia Students. Have a splash at what's written below. Note the emboldened stanzas. They speak on racial segregation and unequal educational opportunities at NATIONAL SCHOOLS. In light of this, I wish to say again the call for a single school system is definitely out of reach. Whether the idealists are too obsessive or that they are fighting for the good of our nation, that however remains to be proven cuz I juz dun see what's the point of pushing for this type of school. I may be wrong. That could be true cuz no one is perfect here. Everyone does mistakes. However, I'm not gonna be able to pull away from making my stand on the One School For All Petition. From what I've been able to observe, if they can hold vernacular schools responsible for racial segregation/disharmony/disunity, I juz can't see why they can't seem to be able to rope 'SBP's like Mara Junior Colleges, Malay College of Kuala Kangsar etc., UiTM, and religious schools into the same domain. Do they not know about these schools? Pretending like these schools don't exist? Or maybe they dun wanna admit they segregate and divide malaysians cuz I bet these schools are their pride and glory(I juz dun think there's anything glorius coming out of these schools). Or their mind is actually registering the word 'humiliated' hence they can't counter what I'm arguing here? Funny, I dunno why the double standard. Why are they leaving these schools off the hook and keep attacking vernacular schools for no apparent reason? Vernacular schools are OPEN to all races. But are those race-preferential schools I mentioned above OPEN TO ALL RACES? Race-preferential means they favor only a single race. Good. Now that I've made my point, continue reading below and note the emboldened stanzas.

Policy vs Practice: The Multicultural and Anti-Racism Education in Malaysia's National School

by AWhite

The heart principle of multicultural and anti-racist education lies on equality of opportunities in education. Foster (1990) recognized the equality of opportunities as the inherent differences in the talents and abilities of individuals, and achieve a fair and just allocation of social positions and rewards. When equality of opportunities is linked with multicultural education, we then look at educational opportunities; where students succeed despite being are from diverse ethnic, race and linguistic communities with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Thus, it can also be argued that multicultural and anti-racist education can only be successful through eliminating racist practices and restricting the chances of success of a particular racial group.

In terms of education in Malaysia, the national schools are government funded and it caters for a diversity of students. Lim (1966 – current), in receiving a letter from concerned parents of whose children attend Sekolah Menangah Kebangsaan Bandar Utama 4. The letter expressed that the school principal had been insensitive to the needs of other ethnic groups as she had introduced Islamic practices into the school system. For example, the school banned shorts for Physical Education as according to Islamic belief, it is considered inappropriate to reveal too much "flesh". In addition, she went as far as banning the beating of drums during Chinese New Year lion dance performance with no apparent reason.

If the drums are banned, it has been questioned, "what is the point of having a lion dance?" because a lion dance without drums will not bring the significant meaning in the Chinese New Year tradition. In other words, how could Vision 2020 be constructed with a community of rich values and loving cultural when students are not taught to appreciate and understand other cultures.

The segregation of differential racial and ethnicities of students can further be seen with an incident that occurred in Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Payu Butterworth. According to the opposition government leader, K.S. Lim, non-Malay parents of students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Payu Butterworth expressed their disappointments on "Program Didik Cemerlang Akademik" as it was based on racial omission for non-Malays. These letters mainly state that for the past few years, certain volunteer teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Payu Butterworth have been conducting the extra classes out of normal school hours to prepare students who are weak in their studies for the coming Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah. These extra classes are free of charge and all students who are taking the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah examination are encouraged to attend. However, one of the letters continues to states that:

…recently the extra class for Ujian Pernilaian Sekolah Rendah has been politicised and the government started to give payments to all teacher who teach those classes BUT there is a condition. The teacher who is to be paid must be MALAY and the extra classes are open ONLY for the MALAY students.

Moreover, if the non-Malay students decided to go for the extra class, they will need to pay a fee of RM$15.00 (AUD$5.50). This incident has highlighted the inequality of education because it has marginalized the non-Malay students on their education righ-ts by imposing a fee on them while Malays students could attend free. The school and the government has shown Malaysian the extent racism exist in the education scheme because Program Didik Cermelang Academic offer has restricted the chances of success for non-Malay students and they were treated like second class citizens in the school. In addition, this incident has violated the Article of 26(1) of the Universal Declaration of Human right where it states, "Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in elementary and fundamental stages...." (1948-1998). However, even after violating the Article 26(1) and receive numerous complain letters, the school and government did not take an appropriate action but instead, they sent away two teachers who supported the complaints.

School is a place where ethical values and cultures can be learnt alongside with the education curriculum. This is what has driven our education system,” he said.Muhyiddin said he welcomed different opinions but stressed the government would not be changing the education policy. The DPM appeared to take pains in not backing the campaign.Muhyiddin, who is also deputy president of Umno, had come under heavy criticism for his remarks after a recent by-election which suggested some Chinese voters were not grateful to the Barisan Nasional (BN).

I muz say that I totally agree with the shooting down of the call for the abolition of vernacular schools. But that doesn't mean I have anything against the 1 school system. I really do believe that the 1 school system is gonna benefit us more than do us any harm. Unfortunately, the thing that's been drawing us back to the ice age is not DISUNITY. It's EQUALITY that guarantees every single soul that's been thriving in Malaysia the basic human rights. AND YES, we need peace and stability in the country. But not by denying us the rights to our beliefs and the set of education that does no harm to anyone, let alone the country. In vernacular schools, BM is addressed as the national language. No one is obviously questioning the position of the language in the constitution. But why can't these One School For All people let vernacular schools off the hook? Those who go to vernacular schools learn BM which the term 'NATIONAL LANGUAGE' or in Mandarin 'Guo Yi' is stamped on their Malay Language textbooks. Still that is not enough. Chinese of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan both address Mandarin as their 'Guo Yi'. But do Malaysian Chinese uphold Mandarin as their 'Guo Yi'? If that's the case, do you seriously think vernacular schools could stay on till now without any action taken on them by the government? They already do not receive enough or sometimes no fundings at all. Most of the fundings come from the Chinese and Indians. This is a living proof that these schools are important to the non-malays. If you think you can crush these schools into pieces, you will definitely be met with strong opposition from the non-malays including me. And there's no doubt that the government agrees to the existence of vernacular schools as it is not pushing to abolish, but merely for a standardized set of syllabus in which no one will feel they have been deprived of their rights.

Some people mention that vernacular schools divide us, they don't promote unity and interaction among the major races of Malaysia. YES we are divided into different columns of communities. AND YES we are racially segregated. But, let me ask you one thing. Can't these Chinese speak in BM? Can't these Indians speak in BM? We dun greet each other when we meet up? Do they not understand not a word in BM? Do they not talk to the Malays? First things first. We are already segregated, as defined by those in support of the 1 School For All Petition, how the hell are we still opening up our houses during the festive seasons of all the three major races in Malaysia? The diversity that we're enjoying is certainly what makes us unique. Malaysia, Truly Asia. I bet we must've heard of that sentence on our Visit Malaysia Ads. Why are we truly Asia? Cuz you can find malays, chinese and indians in a single country called malaysia. And aren't all these make us UNIQUE in the first place? Are we gonna be that UNIQUE anymore if these schools shut down? There's no specific label for a specific ethnic no more. I believe some think a specific label to a certain race is divisive and segregatory. Yeah, that cannot be denied. But please be realistic, our line of descent doesn't lie. We still look chinese even if you wanna do away with your true racial identity. Your skin tone, your facial features and your upbringing. They all point to your racial roots. How are we supposed to pretend that we are not who we are? It's impractical plus illogical. Unrealistic plus idealistic. Too outlandish. Unacceptable. The most important thing is how are you gonna find the common ground. It is our hearts that count, not some kind of bullshit on what you can give to the country. All of us do realize that we are living our lives multiracially and multireligiously. ENOUGH SAID but we dun live our lives with an empty head and heart like we mean nothing to this world. ALL OF US SHARE A COMMON VISION that is to contribute to the country, make this country a better place to live in even though we go to different types of schools. Hence, is it that treacherous if the non-Malays go to vernacular schools? What makes this activity the cause of racial discord? What makes'em the real culprit of impeding racial unity in the country? Cuz these very people who go to vernacular schools are better scholars than those who go to national schools?

It's really funny when there are certain quarters chanting and rhyming for vernacular schools be shuttered cuz they are the main reason behind the disunity among us. That's so wrong. I muz ask these very people have they ever tried to understand why vernacular schools are that important and dear to the Chinese? Have they tried to for juz one day tour these schools and see for themselves what kind of disunity they bring to the country? Whatever learned at vernacular schools, the syllabus especially(already a standardized one, no point debating on this) is the same as the one learned at national schools. Why the fuss about this type of schools then? Cuz only Chinese go to these schools? How 'bout the meager portion of 1-5% of Malay and Orang Asli(indigenous people in the peninsular) students who'd get stuck in these schools every year?

And to be honest with you, I detest the content of the One School For All petition which holds vernacular schools responsble for public and racial disharmony and I am ready to jump on anyone questioning the existence of vernacular schools. That petition is indeed clearly depicting vernacular schools as the single reason for decades of racial disunity, a wedge in the 1 Malaysia goal and should rightfully be wiped off the map and phased out in totality. Juz fuck off!! That fucking petition is unbearable even to a moderate chinese like me, how do you suppose it would appear to those who have been fighting for years to keep vernacular schools afloat? Why can't people be a li'l sensitive when they wanna dish out something to the public? What kind of shit are they dishing out to the public? I'm telling you that bullshit should not at all costs be condoned. To say vernacular schools are the main reason of disunity and racial tension in Malaysia is totally reprehensible and unacceptable. If these people wanna keep on saying this, GO AHEAD!!! But let me remind those in support of the petition in case they forget even the Malay Boarding Schools(SBP) such as MCKK and MRSM, Religious Schools(Sekolah Agama), MATRICULATION COLLEGES, and UiTM segregate Malaysians racially and in some ways, religiously. By factoring in vernacular schools in the real-culprit-behind-racial-disunity equation means those schools I mentioned above that mostly cater to only Malay students muz be held responsible as well in causing racial disharmony. By shuttering these schools only will I call it fair. These schools are as validly culpable as vernacular schools if we really are serious in maintaining our belief that vernacular schools are the main reason for racial tension. Blaming it solely on vernacular schools is hence completely irresponsible and deleteriously erroneous. I dun give a damn about the long explanation about the special rights whatsoever. I'm indeed only interested in the word 'segregation' cuz this is the word those in support of the One School For All petition are definitely fighting to wipe out. Still, if article 153 is brought into discussion, well, I guess I can counter those pricks with the fact that the constitution actually upholds the existence of vernacular schools. Hence, if there's anyone loudly screaming for the shuttering of vernacular schools, they can be held responsible for sedition. If the Malay Boarding Schools, Religious Schools, Matriculation Colleges and UiTM are designated schools with their effective roles in assisting the malays, I juz can't see why vernacular schools, the only option for the non-malay students to feel cherished and respected, cannot co-exist to assist the non-malays in return. For the non-malays, vernacular education is the last bastion of defense against the injustices that befall them. Therefore, are these people implying to us that the n0n-malays cannot have their rights upheld here in this country, not even the most basic ones?

Komuniti Demi Negara

I'm for the 1 School System. Not the petition. Dun get me wrong. Those racist remarks in the petition are the reason why I am fighting and standing firm on my ground not to support nor sign it. The content of the petition(above), what's being related in the petition kinda tells another story. And I think the only one thing that's gonna cause racial discord is the content of the petition itself. Therefore, the real culprit actually LIES WITHIN THE PETITION.

This is the Column Made From A PS Pipette...

Before I forget, these are some of the photos of the hydroxyapatite column shot today. The column is made from a PS pipette. But, I had to somehow switch it to a PP syringe cuz if I were to use a column of PS material, I would have to coat it with something to ensure there's no proteins sticking onto the wall of the PS column. PP is somehow highly recommended for use in proteome science cuz of its display of low adhesive force.

Hydroxyapatite is actually in white crystal form and is suspended in a 1mM phosphate buffer with a pH value of 6.8. Yes, this is definitely 'bout HAWWWT Girls dropping it like its HOT in the pearl of the orient!!! Most of my friends, especially the Chinese, would mention 'Ipoh' if we somehow were discussing 'bout hot girls. I find it amusing for each time they say this 'Ipoh Mali' term. It's a Chinese way of pronouncing 'Ipoh Mari' which means 'From Ipoh'. It's been a norm for us to associate Ipoh with hot pretty girls. Yeah, like who doesn't recognize Dato' Michelle Yeoh. Well, this time around, if someone mentions the word IPOH again, I'd screw them over. If you're ever in Penang, be on the lookout for HOT GIRLS in Gurney especially. HOT plus PRETTY. It's double happiness. Err, awrite, it can also be double jeopardy :p hehehehe. They come together as a package. Therefore, we've been wrong all this time to credit Ipoh as the sole origin or birthplace of HOT PRETTY GIRLS. TOTALLY WRONG cuz we have a lot here in Penang either.

Came to realize this when I went out for lunch the other day with my seniors. I actually saw quite a number in Gurney and at Bukit Jambul SC but shrugged it off thinking they were juz mere coincidence and there shouldn't be that many here in Penang. Unfortunately, I was wrong cuz you could even find a lot more in USM and along Sungai Dua. Back to the lunch out with my seniors, I spotted this really cute and hot girl sitting at a table next to ours. And it juz kinda clicked all of a sudden. I mean, it made sense at that time as I was thinking Penang is really a haven to find HOT CHICKS. Tough luck, couldn't snap a photo of that cute girl in the restaurant cuz those people in the restaurant could throw you a scary hostile look and they might call me a perv for taking her photo without any clear intentions. I dun wanna be like HARE, being attracted to his own cousins. That's like VERY DISGUSTING. hahahhaha. I'll try to get as many photos of HOT GIRLS as possible during these six months in penang and upload them here. FRET NOT!!!

What A Great Song Daniel Cage Brought Into This World In The Year of 2000!!!

This is definitely a super cool song. I was scared stiff when Dr. Gam came into the lab today around 3pm. I thought the homework I've been doing since last nite would be futile. Kinda went the opposite way however cuz my protein purification protocol has been greenlighted by Dr. Gam. So, I'll basically be using phospate buffer(even though I think TLB would suffice as an elution buffer) with a pH of 6.8 to elute, equilibrate and wash the gel packed bed. The molarity of the phosphate buffer has to be different however for each process. The only problem now is I'll have to look for an extremely small column to pack the hydroxyapatite gel into. After all, my samples are always extracted in microliters. Very small amount. And tomorrow, I'll have to work on the phosphate buffer.

You know what I like the most after two weeks of socializing with this bunch of seniors of the proteomics lab? The seniors here are super friendly, helpful, selfless and willing to explain to you everything about proteome science. Whenever you need the help, they are always there. If you dun know your way 'round the lab, they are super eager to show you the way things work in the lab. lol. The most critical part of all was when they had to explain to me the extraction protocols. Hang on, no, I guess the supermost critical part was actually during the time when they had to explain to me the difference between proteins and DNA. I tend to complicate matters for them with alot of asking most of the time. lol. However, they are without doubt very patient with me. I must admit after four and a half years of Chemical Engineering, Biology has become a complete stranger to me. Recombinant DNA, membrane proteins, adenine, guanine bla bla bla. All these terms had haunted me long enough when I was sitting for my A Level equivalent MHSC. And now, they are back to HAUNT ME again!!! good lord. Talking 'bout karma. :p

Something Came As A Shock Today in The Proteomics Lab!!!

Dr. Gam dropped by the lab today to check on us TWICE in a juz a day. Surprise surprise for me. The other students, my seniors I mean, seemed unfazed however by her presence cuz they've been betting on her surprise visit to the lab today since last week. They seem to have gotten used to her sudden, planning-to-catch-you-offguard visits. After all, they've been here for at least 1/2 year. They should be able to read Dr. Gam's mind by now. lol. The first time she came in, she wanted me to work on the protein identification of non-halal sausages(pork of corse, need I mention it that clearly here? :p). However, she then backed out and said she needed some time think it over so she asked me to continue with my plant protein extraction. Then, in the afternoon, she stopped by and asked my senior, Hui Hua to brief her on the normal and cancerous breast tissues protein analysis results. When she was done with Hui Hua, she turned to me and came up with a very challenging(to me this new project is definitely beyond comprehension) idea. I'll have to pack a hydroxyapatite column, run TLB extract thru the gel, check with the 1D electrophoresis, and compare the results with Hui Hua's and Lay Chin's. Basically, I'll have to develop a new, improved method to entrap(more like adsorbing) the hydrophobic proteins in the gel and then elute it with a suitable type of buffer which is yet to be determined. I'm not gonna be able to tell everythg here as I have to flip thru tons of journals tonite. My seniors told me I'd better not be ill-prepared as Dr. Gam would always ask what homework you have done the night before and you will have to discuss with her on how you plan to start your work. They know her better than I do, I mean the other half of her if you know what I mean. NO DOUBT tomorrow is the D-Day and I'd better work my ass off or I'll get my ass kicked out of the school. lol.

Breaking The Hiatus!!!

It takes me 13 minutes to walk from the house I'm renting to the Proteomics Lab in USM. There hasn't been a day which felt tireless for me. And the funny thing is, I at first was intent on keeping this blog updated for at least every two days but dang I guess that is juz too much for me too take now. Look out, I might throw up already. lol.

You muz be wondering what I've been doing for the past week. Awrite, I'll tell ya. I've been assigned with a research project that needs me to extract protein from a type of shrub which in Malay is called Capa or also scientifically known as Blumae balsmifera. I am really laZ to type what I've been doing. But I'll leave you guyz with some nice shots in the lab.

June 5. Learned to extract protein(the theory is as simple as the extraction theory we learned in Jean Geankopolis' Unit Operations, only that this concerns living things and most of the time is very tedious. You're always told to disinfect, disinfect and disinfect) from lean chicken meat, make the mini gel, and run the 1D Electrophoresis on Powerpac. In some ways I think it's really funny cuz you have to like spray a solution of 70% alcohol at various times and keep the cut chicken meat in a box of ice to make sure the proteins do not get denatured or attacked by the microorganisms in the air.

June 9. Protein extraction carried out on Capa leaves. The leaves were freeze-dried with Liquid Nitrogen(LNO2). You won't believe juz how COLD this baby is(btw, it is transparent for those who haven't seen LNO2 before). The crackling sound it makes when it comes into contact with the leaves makes you wonder what it would do to your fragile skin. The leaves were then crushed into powder with a mortar and a pestle. Make no mistake, the leaves were first washed and dried in the oven at 30C. And the whole day of June 8 was actually wasted with washing the leaves juz so you know.

June 11. Do I still need to tell you what that instrument I posted below is? The last picture at the bottommost however is the gel I've been talking about that had been stained with coomasie brilliant blue and destained with methanol. The protein bands aren't that clear in the pic.

June 12. I had no time to snap photos. BZ discussing with the gardener whom I call SIFU about the Capa leaves, grinding the leaves, making the mini gel for 1D electrophoresis, and running the electrophoresis analysis. The only thing I managed to capture from my SEG705 is this pic below.

The Missing Link unveiled at the American Museum of Natural History.

Should work on this article when I've still got the time. Today will be my last 'UNRESTRICTED' day in Penang given the fact that I'll start working in the lab tomorrow and will be taking part in the NRSK at SGM's Bukit Tambun Culture Center this weekend. Anticipating the words 'BZ'.

The Missing Link. First saw this on NBC Nightly News(May 19, 2009) and thought it was interesting and thought-provoking.

The 47 million-year-old fossilized remains of a primate is seen at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

They call it the Holy Grail of human evolution. My bet is Charles Darwin would be in the highest heaven there was if only he could live thru to see this. lol. But that's impossible unless someone could jolt him out of his grave. Erm, he would be a zombie then. lol. I think if you've played Parasite Eve's first instalment before, the name 'Lucy' would be no stranger to you. The famous skeleton of an early human ancestor known as Lucy was discovered in Africa in the 1970s. When first found, scientists were baffled by the question: Where did she come from?

However, the missing link here isn't about Lucy, Australopithecus afarensis, one of the early hominids. Lucy did make unrelenting headlines but it was in 2006. If you'd like to delve a lot more into the story, here's a link that might help. Speaking of which, the missing link that's stolen the limelight from Lucy that could most probably hold the answers to all the mind boggling puzzles is all about the recently unveiled 47 million-year-old fossil primate which is said to be a human ancestor. The cat-sized fossil primate has indeed set the world of paleontology abuzz. They even say its impact on the world of paleontology will be 'somewhat like an asteroid falling down on earth'. Norwegian paleontologist, Jorn Hurum of the University of Oslo Natural History Museum calls the fossilized skeleton of a monkey and I quote 'the first link to all humans...truly a fossil that links world heritage.' The fossil has been dubbed 'Ida' juz like the african hominid being tagged Lucy. The nearly complete transitional fossil is 20 times older than most of the fossils that provide evidence for human evolution.

This 95%-complete 'lemur monkey' is described as the 'eight wonder of the world'.

Researchers say proof of this transitional species finally confirms charles darwin's theory of evolution and the then radical, outlandish ideas he came up with during his time aboard the Beagle. It shows characteristics from the very primitive non-human evolutionary line(prosimians, such as lemurs), but is more related to the human evolutionary line(anthropoids, such as monkeys), said Norwegian paleontologist Jorn Hurum. However, she's not really an anthropoid either according to Prof. Hurum. The fossil, Darwinius Massilae, stands 1ft 9in tall and is believed to be a female hence the title she is accorded to the fossil.

Ida has been studied secretly for the past two years by a team of fossil experts led by Professor Jorn Hurum of Norway's Natural History Museum and has been transported to New York to be unveiled to the world during the bicentenary of Darwin's birth. She also made a pit stop in London to be exhibited for only one day before returning to Oslo.

Truly an amazing discovery and a strong testament to Darwin's out of this world theory. More of this can be found here.

Finally, I'm all settled down...

As the title suggests, I'm finally all settled this morning at this new place called House No. 10. Yesterday, my cousin drove over to Vistana and brought us to the Kek Lok Si Temple(near Bukit Bendera) and also Gurney Drive. Ember dumped us and went shopping with her friend at Queensbay Mall. Selfish Ember. lol. I bet all of us know that Gurney Drive is a must-visit place no doubt. Most importantly, you can't also drop by Gurney Drive without giving the talk-of-the-town Asam Laksa, Penang's very own specialty, a shot. The traffic in Georgetown was chaotic last nite, especially the highway leading to and from the Penang Bridge. Sigh, I dunno if I can ever take the traffic here. lol.

Pics below: The many faces of the Kek Lok Si Temple.

Pics below: Shot along Gurney Drive. I'm signing in from the hotel room of Vistana Penang. It's been a helluva funny day for us. We planned to take off at 4am, but we got up late and could only leave at around 5.30am. Before that, my elder sis, Steph had called in and booked a room with Hotel Malaysia, somewhere in Gurney and very far away from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Sungai Dua. I checked with the hotel again this morning to tell the frontdesk receptionist that we're gonna be late since everyone wanted me to call and inform the hotel that we're gonna be late. Well, I did the honors. And the frontdesk said it was ok as long as we checked in before 6pm. In another wild goose chase, my eldest sis's(Ember) friend, our tour guide, who happens to also be a Penang native, guided us to the wrong hotel, Hotel Seri Malaysia. She thought all the while it was Hotel Seri Malaysia we'd been planning to hunker down at. It was funny and exhausting as hell. Eventually, we decided we had no choice as we didn't know our way 'round Georgetown and Hotel Malaysia was too far that we wouldn't be able to make it in time to check in. Hence, I called Vistana Penang and asked if there were any rooms available. All I had in mind was, Vistana Penang is the nearest to Sungai Dua and only two blocks away from the Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex. Plus, the best thing of all, it provides internet access(or I won't be able to post something up tonite) and a free parking space. Fortunately, the frontdesk in her usual obligatory manner, politely said there were still rooms available at Vistana, only the apartments were out. So, here I am now writing this compassionate piece for your kind perusal from the hotel room of Vistana Penang. hehehehe. By the way, I made Ember call Hotel Malaysia to cancel the booking. lol.

Pic: Guess what this place is? Practically it is the hotel frontdesk, only that I focused my cellphone lens on the carvings of the wall.

Pic: The hotel lobby. We've been here in 2006 for Ember's graduation day once. Owh fuck, Ember has been peeking when I didn't realize and managed to correct what I'm puling here. She said we weren't here at that time for her graduation. We checked into the Vistana Apartment to fetch her back home from Georgetown. On her graduation day, it was another apartment that we rented together with her other college friends' families. Now I remember. lol. Told you I have bad memories.

More pics of Vistana Penang's lobby below.

Tomorrow night, I'll move into a rented house on Sungai Dua and right across the street is Universiti Sains Malaysia. Actually, I still don't know as of now the exact location of the house. But according to my soon to be housemate, the varsity is within walking distance from where I'll be settling down. There you go, at least I'm relieved from all the worries for now. lol. We didn't go 'round the main gate so I couldn't take the picture seen from the main gate. Next time, I'll post the main gate pic up. lol. Keep your fingers crossed.

Pic: The side gate of Universiti Sains Malaysia on Sungai Dua.

Oh, did I mention we stopped by Juru's Auto City? I guess I DIDN'T. lol. Ok, ok, sorry. We dropped by Auto City for lunch at Nando's. Well, I didn't really like the food there, it was ok. Not exactly enthralling or extra delicious that could leave you wanting for more. That's all I can say even though both Steph and Ember keep insisting that Nando's is a lot better than Kenny Roger's and that if I ever tried Nando's, I would never take a second look at Kenny Roger's. lol. I still dig Kenny Roger's more though I've tried Nando's now. Entschuldigung.

Get a Job? Continue with Master's Degree? I believe Universiti Sains Malaysia's got the answer...

I'll be leaving for Georgetown tomorrow morning, around 4am. You guyz must be thinking that I must have been outta my mind. Yeah, I know, 4am is too much to take, too early and a li'l hard to believe. Well, first off, my parents will be sending me off. Therefore, I or should I say, WE, can leave at whatever time available or deemed convenient to us. I haven't even started complaining so you guyz had better not. lol. Second, we already booked a hotel room so we need to make it to the hotel in time. Leaving early shall promise us that we'll have no excuse if we wish to drive in the slow lane.

I've been packing my stuff for 3 days straight. I'm not exactly a person who really does things at the very last minute. But no matter how early I start packing, I'll surely miss out on something in the end and I'll only find out what I've missed putting in the bag when I'm finally all settled. I'm not saying being prepared is a complete waste, but that's just me. I tend to forget things. I can't even remember many of my high school friends' names. sorry guyz. Tut mir leid. Don't worry, I still remember the faces though. lol.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM). That's where I'll be interning. To be honest, I think the 6 month internship our university requires us to go thru is too long. We've been extended for one semester(about 6 months), hence I personally think the 6month internship should be replaced with a 2 month one instead. I'm not sure what to say, I know I don't speak for the masses. But I do think for the plans I've laid out for myself, these 6months are a waste of time. I'd have gotten into USM for a master's degree by now if it weren't for this 6month internship. SIGH...Guess I'll have to improvise.

Many at my university were a bit discouraging when I told'em 'bout my plans. Maybe they were expecting me to enrol in a chemical company/chemical plant for my internship, but instead I made up my mind to intern at USM. They thought I made the wrong decision. Well, they have got it all wrong. I never thought of working right after my undergraduate studies. I've always been meaning to further my studies until Phd. Hence, enrolling in one of the top universities in Malaysia is the first step to attaining that goal. USM is currently an Apex University, and the only one in Malaysia. I've also been told that it's got a world class drug facility. Which is why I think I've made the right choice. Plus, the current economic situation doesn't seem to be that promising. Securing a job in this current grim economic outlook would be tough.

Guess I've written too much. lol. I'll post something up once I'm in Georgetown. See you guyz 'round. STREAMYX IS SO GONNA GET IT!!!!

I've been experiencing this irritating sticky situation since last week in which my IE8 would display 'INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE'. Fucking gets on my nerves everytime it does that. And I've fucking tried diagnosing the connection problems for so many times(lost count of it) and all of them pointed to 'winsock registry problems'. And juz what in the world is WINSOCK!!??? I'm a computer noob. I don't recall in the back of my head I've ever heard of the word 'winsock'. Googled the problem and found some ways to fix it, hell yeah was happy for a moment but the appalling gloom quickly took over once again when the problem persisted. In fact, it keeps happening from time to time. If I leave my connection on for a couple hours, the problem will be back all over again. Could there be a problem with my ethernet card or the problem lies deep inside the LSP? owh or maybe my winsock setting is corrupted? So many possibilities cropping up at various possible occasions. I'm so pissed. How should I know which of those is the answer? I tried LSPfix and Winsock XP Fix. Both had me reboot my computer, it was so fucking annoying cuz I had to restart the whole damn thing, and reconnect my broadband internet connection. Worst thing of all, it takes some time for my laptop computer to finish loading. I bought it in 2005. it's been 4 years, what more could you ask from a 2005 compaq? You're already lucky if it could last up to 4 years. I even gave the new Windows XP Service Pack 2 netsh commands a shot. Both to no avail. Didn't help to fix the goddamn problem.

Can anyone please help me? Or I'll have to settle for the last option, reformat the whole operating system. And I hate it when it comes to that. Tedious and messy way in dealing with a tiny but persistant problem. What a pest!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://seismicjolt.blogspot.com/2009/05/dammit-whats-going-on-with-my-internet.html' title='GODAMMIT, whazzamater with my Internet Access? My supervisor, Madam Shikin, called me on the morning of May 17. She sounded extremely shocked, no doubt she was also in cloud 9, over the news that she'd just bagged the ITEX'09 gold award. I'm really proud of her to be honest. For your information, there's also no words that could describe how jumpy she was while waiting to be judged at the display booth at the convention center. Everything just happened to get on her nerves. That's what she related to me when I met her last week. Hare tried to reach me too on the same day to break the good news, but Madam Shikin made it first. lol, so no more surprise when Hare tried to enthuse me with the GOLD MEDAL news. On the night of the same day, she texted me saying we actually bagged another special award, the Henry Goh Award and our Vice Chancellor was dang proud of our achievement. I was taken aback by the text message that I didn't know what to reply her. I was like, WOAH!! this can't be real. tried pinching myself on the cheek, it hurt. lol. Well, it was real and it was happening. For the first time in my life, I felt what I had put in was worth everything in the world. COOL!!

Feast your eyes on the awards below:

As a matter of fact, I actually did not help to set up the display booth nor did I help to look after the display booth for our biofilm project. I wasn't even at the convention center. I may not have participated at the ITEX'09, but I did take part in the research work. Well, it was a great waste that I couldn't participate in the process of presenting the project to the judges and visitors, I could have screwed up everything for my supervisor instead as we speak. lol.

Anyways, congratulations to Madam Shikin, Hare, Pijan and Manek and not forgetting myself either. We fucking trashed ITEX'09!! Hell yeah we REALLY DID.
